New York Eyelash Extension Certification Requirements

In most states, you need either an esthetician or a cosmetology license to apply eyelash extensions lawfully.

However, like most things, it’s a little different in New York.

Everything is bigger and better in New York, and you must be at the top of your game to make it in this competitive field. In New York, the Department of Licensing Services requires you to have an esthetician and cosmetology license in order to do lash extensions professionally.

We’ll give you a second to pick your jaw up from the floor because, babe, we get it! Earning both aesthetician and cosmetology license is time and money. But it’s worth your while if you’re determined to make your lashing dreams come true.

Now, on to an even greater question: Why do you need two licenses to become a lash technician?

According to New York General Business Law, Article 27, section 400, esthetics and cosmetology are defined as the following:

(6) The practice of “esthetics” means providing for a fee, or any consideration or exchange, whether direct or indirect, services to enhance the appearance of the face, neck, arms, legs, and shoulders of a human being by the use of compounds or procedures including makeup, eyelashes, depilatories, tonics, lotions, waxes, sanding and tweezing.

(7) The practice of “cosmetology” means providing the services described in subdivisions four, five and six of this section, providing service to the hair, head, face, neck or scalp of a human being.

In other words, eyelash extensions fall under the definition of both cosmetology and esthetics.

A solid foundation will set you up for long-term success in the competitive New York beauty industry.
